Ph.D. in Mathematics (International Program)

Program Title: Doctor of Philosophy Program in Mathematics 

Degree: Doctor of Philosophy (Mathematics), Ph.D. (Mathematics)

Objectives of the Program

  • To produce Ph.D. graduates who would be able to contribute to the development of science and technology in Thailand.
  • To develop the human resources to satisfy the needs of the work force both in the government and the private sectors.
  • To produce Ph.D. graduates who can develop into world class researchers and carry out independent innovative research in mathematics and the related fields.

Admission Requirements

  1. Bachelor degree in mathematics or an equivalent area with at least fourty-five (45) credits of mathematics courses and a GPA of at least 3.25, or
  2. Master degree in any areas with a Bachelor degree in mathematics or an equivalent area which includes at least fourty-five (45) credits of mathematics courses with a GPA of at least 3.50.

Program Options

Type I

  • A student who has a Master degree needs to complete at least 48 credits of research for dissertation.
  • A student who has only a Bachelor degree needs to complete at least 72 credits of research for dissertation.
  • Under the recommendation of the thesis advisor, a student may have to enroll in other courses which are relevant to research work to be undertaken.

Type II

  • A student with a Master degree needs to complete 12 credits of course work and 48 credits of research for dissertation.
  • A student with only a Bachelor degree needs to complete 24 credits of course work and 48 credits of research for dissertation.

Duration of Study

Maximum of 6 years

Registration

Students must register full-time.

Graduation Requirements

Courses

  • Type I program requires 48 credits for a student with a Master degree and 72 credits for a student with only a Bachelor degree.
  • Type II program requires 48 credits of dissertation together with 12 graduate credits for a student with a Master degree, and 24 graduate credits for a student with only a Bachelor degree.

  6. SCMA 670 Advanced Differential Equations* (3-0)

Grades
A student in Type II Program has to achieve a grade point average of 3.00 or better.

English

  • TOEFL Paper Based score of at least 500 or
  • TOEFL Computer Based score of at least 173 or
  • TOEFL Internet Based score of at least 61 or
  • IELTS score of at least 5.5.

Qualifying Examination
All students must pass a qualifying examination at least 3 subject in four areas of specialty which may be chosen amonge the following areas : Algebra, Topology, Differential Equations, Real and Complex Analysis, Mathematical Physics, Mathematical Statistics, Numerical Analysis, Geometry and Functional Analysis.

Preliminary Examination
A student who has passed the qualifying examination, the TOEFL requirement, and the course requirement, becomes a Ph.D. candidate.

Specialty Examination
A student needs to pass an oral examination on the defense of his/her dissertation once it has been completed.

Research and Dissertation
A student needs to complete a significant piece of original research and write a dissertation on the research in the form approved by the graduate school.

Publication
At least one paper published in an international journal or other venues accepted by the international community.
