Title: Integrating data mining techniques: An example of a logistic regression model integrated with TreeNet and association rules analysis

This talk focuses on the process and benefits of integrating multiple data mining techniques into a single framework. The example given constitutes a framework in which three techniques—TreeNet, association rules analysis (ASA), and logistic regression—are combined in order to improve the performance of the latter. With TreeNet as the first step in building the logistic model, new variables are generated by discretizing quantitative variables. With ASA as the next step, new interactions are generated from all the original categorical variables and all the newly generated predictors from TreeNet. These newly generated variables and interactions are used as candidate predictors to build an optimal logistic regression model. The method is tested on and the results given for four medical datasets—heart disease, heart failure, breast cancer, and hepatitis. Although the focus here is on medical datasets, this proposed methodology is equally applicable to datasets in many other areas.
