Operations Research & Optimization
About
Operations Research (OR) is a quantitative approach that deploys advanced mathematical and analytical methods to help business and organizations to make decisions more efficiently. It is a multidisciplinary field with a variety of applications. It involves knowledge in mathematics, statistics, computer, economics and engineering.
Research themes
Members of our group applied advanced OR methods to real-world problems such as transportation, airline industries, healthcare, manufacturing, financial, supply chain management and logistics and other industries.
Techniques applied by our researchers include but are not limited to optimization, algorithms, simulation, statistical analysis and mathematical modelling.
Related programs
There are several OR-related courses offered in the BSc Mathematics and MSc Applied Mathematics programs. These include fundamental OR, advanced programming and quantitative analysis courses.
OR plays an important role in manufacturing. It can be applied to solve many problems in industries such as resource allocation, production planning, inventory control, transportation management. Several OR courses are offered in the BSc Industrial Mathematics & Data Science program.
Methods in operations research can be applied in problems in insurance and actuarial science to manage risk. There are courses offered in Actuarial Science program.
