Program structure

Types of study

There are two types of study in the PhD Mathematics program at the Faculty of Science, Mahidol University:

  • Type 1: Research only
  • Type 2: Coursework and research

In the sections below, you can find more details about study plans and options for both study types.

Type 1: Research only

Only students who have obtained a master’s degree prior to joining the program are eligible for Type 1. In this study type, students must complete at least 48 credits of research. As shown in the study plan below, students will spend the whole period of study on conducting research and produce a doctoral dissertation.

Type 2: Coursework and research

In Type 2, students must fulfill both coursework and research requirements. Two study plans are available in this study type.

Plan 2.1 for students with a master’s degree

Students with a master’s degree prior to joining the program can choose Plan 2.1. In this study plan, students must complete 12 credits of course work and 36 credits of research for dissertation. Total credits are not less than 48 credits. The recommended study plan is as follows:

Plan 2.2 for students with a bachelor’s degree

Students without a master’s degree must pursue Plan 2.2. In this study plan, students must complete 24 credits of course work and 48 credits of research for dissertation. Total credits are not less than 72 credits. The recommended study plan is as follows:
